That's What's Up!
JOY's "Art of Yoga Project" Update
Downward facing dog, tree pose, meditation and art - our Art of Yoga Project will be moving onto the campus of UMR beginning in January. Through the efforts of Jenny Hegland, Capstone Coordinator and JOY volunteer, JOY will now be holding weekly two hour classes for 15 teen girls who are on probation or who come from families who have been involved with the court system. In addition to space, Jenny has recruited the assistance of UMR students of color who will participate in the classes and work as mentors to our JOY girls .
This program has been supported by a three-year "girlsBest" grant through the Women's Foundation of MN.
The Art of Yoga Project is a curriculum that was designed in California for girls involved with the court system. The program uses art and Yoga to teach girls how to make better choices, love themselves, identify destructive emotions and substitute healthy alternatives to manage those emotions.
